Michael Holter NWS, OPS, SWS, SWA, TXN


Texas artist Michael Holter works in both watercolor and oil. Michael's work has received numerous awards and recognition and can be found in private and corporate collections in the US and several foreign countries. His current work is in two categories: figurative watercolor and oil landscapes (both plein air and studio).


Michael is a signature member of The National Watercolor Society, Texas & Neighbors, the Southwestern Watercolor Society and The Society of Watercolor Artists. He is also a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Transparent Watercolor Society, The Outdoor Painters Society, the Portrait Society of America, and the American Impressionist Society.


"I have been influenced by artists such as Charles Reid, Richard Schmid, Burt Silverman, Frank Webb, John Singer Sargent, Ted Nuttall and many others. Even though I have an art degree, most of what I put into practice is self-taught through studying the work of these distinguished artists and much painting."

Open to all artists, 18 and older and legal residents of Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana



Supports: canvas, panel, paper, or yupo. Two-dimensional works must classify in one of FIVE CATEGORIES: 

  1. Oil painting 
  2. Acrylic 
  3. Water Media - Watercolor, casein and gouache 
  4. Mixed Media -The use of two or more mediums, collage, calligraphy, hand-pulled prints. Collage must incorporate two-dimensional, self-created elements. No relief or three-dimensional objects, including found objects or magazine clippings. 
  5. Drawing - includes Pastel, Colored Pencil, Graphite, Ink, Silver, Gold, Conte Crayon, oil pastel, markers, scratchboard, etc. 


Submitted works of art must be two-dimensional originals completed within the last two years without instructor supervision. Work must not be a copy of other artist's work (including reference photographs). 



Computer generated, photographic, offset printed, collaborative and previously ACCEPTED work into the Texas & Neighbors Regional Art competition are ineligible. 


Artwork more than the 50 inch MAXIMUM SIZE (including frame) in either dimension or less than the 12 inch MINIMUM SIZE in either dimension--or 144 square inches (excluding frame.) 


Irving Art Association reserves the right to reject any works not meeting eligibility requirements, or deemed inappropriate to hang in the Irving Arts Center (including frontal nudity) even after the image has been accepted. 


All sales from this show will be handled through the Irving Art Association. IAA requires a 20% commission on all sold paintings. The artist is liable for all taxes and commissions on these sales. Although the Irving Art Association will exercise due care in handling works submitted to this exhibition, neither the Irving Art Association, nor the Irving Arts Center will be responsible for any loss or damage to any art work. Artists are expected to insure their artwork.

Submit your entries online

Only online entries -- no mailed or hand-delivered entries.




300 DPI Digital Images in JPEG format -1800 pixels or 6 inches (on the longest dimension) will ONLY be accepted. 3MB maximum image file size or submission may fail.


Rename each .jpg file with the artist's last name and first nsme or initial and the corresponding entry number on the TXN entry form OR the title of the artwork. Examples: The first image from Ann Smith would submitted as Smith, A1 OR Smith,Ann_Daisy Chain.


Submitting images files with camera's numbering system or any other will not be accepted. Images should show ONLY the work of art (no mat, no frame, no easel or background of any kind.) 


Images of accepted entries will become the property of IAA and lAC to be used for the catalogue and other printing material, archives, web site, and educational purposes. 


Completed entry form, digital JPEG images and fees must be received by midnight on Monday, February 1, 2017


Entry fee of $40 allows up to 3 entries per artist. Pay online through PayPal (you can use a credit or debit card through PayPal). If you cannot pay by PayPal, please contact us at info@texasandneighbors.com


ALL FEES ARE NONREFUNDABLE. The juror will select 70 to 75 artworks from submitted entries.


Members of the Irving Art Association receive $5 off the entry fee.  New members may join online at time of entry and are eligible to participate in the IAA Juried Members Exhibit held in May. See www.irvingartassociation.org

Entry Checklist

  • Deadline is midnight on Monday, February 1, 2017
  • Complete the the online entry form 
  • Be sure your email is correct or you will not receive a response.
  • Submit your images online - Be sure to follow the image format requirements Images that are too large may cause problems.
  • After you click the "Submit Form" button, you should receive a confirmation copy of your entry by email within an hour. If not, contact us
  • Pay online through PayPal. Pressing the Submit button on the Registration Form will direct you to PayPal. Receipt will come directly from PayPal. Note: if you cannot use PayPal, contact us at info@




  • Artwork must be framed professionally or on a 1" - 2" wrapped canvas with all sides painted (no white sides accepted).
  • Works must be wired with screw eyes or D-rings, ready to hang, with backing. No saw tooth hangers.
  • Plexiglas glazing only, except pastel - glass permitted.
  • MINIMUM ARTWORK SIZE - 12 inches in either dimension without frame. (or 144 square inches)
  • MAXIMUM - 50 inches FRAMED size in either dimension. A diptych or triptych must be framed in a single frame.




Packing: Pack accepted works in light-weight, sturdy, reusable cartons. Strongbox cartons are recommended. DO NOT pack works in wooden crates or with excessively loose packing material such as peanuts, squiggles or cloth. ENTRIES RECEIVED WITH LOOSE PACKING MATERIAL WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. 


Labels: Clearly print your name and address on the outside and inside of the shipment cartons. Insure your shipment for your protection. 


Shipping: Ship works via FedEx or UPS, prepaid WITH A PREPAID RETURN LABEL to arrive within March 6 -10, 2017 to the IRVING ARTS CENTER, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX 75062. Works that arrive after March 11 noon will not be judged.


Returns: IAA will repack works in the original packing carton with the original packing material, affix the prepaid label, and return the shipment via FedEx or UPS.


Hand Delivery



Hand-delivered accepted works

must be received on Saturday March 11, 2017 between 10:00 am - 3:00 pm at the IRVING ARTS CENTER, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX 75062. Entries received after 3:00 pm will not be judged.


Hand-delivered entries must be picked up on Sunday, June 4 between 1:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Artists who do not pick up their entries during the appropriate time will be charged a fee of $10 per day. NO EXCEPTIONS.

TxN Signature Status

Earned by having five paintings exhibited iin the Texas & Neighbors exhibit. This designation is retroactive. A medal and certificate are awarded.


Artists who receive signature status have the right to add the TXN acronym to their paintings, plus a listing with a direct link to their websites on the TxN site.
